Production Lumiere Scheme 2024

Am I eligible to apply?

The Production Lumiere Scheme is suited to someone looking to transition from technician work into production electrics or programming work. It is an opportunity to observe and engage with various methods of production electrics and programming. The Scheme enables the Lumiere to experience a variety of working practices whilst developing their own and making connections in the industry.

We welcome Production Lumiere applications from anyone who has a minimum of one year’s professional experience working in the industry. Unfortunately, we cannot accept anyone who is currently in full-time education.

The ALPD are committed to inclusivity and are actively encouraging applications from those who are currently under-represented in the UK theatre industry. We would also like to encourage applicants who may have moved away from theatre for various reasons and want to return to the industry.

You do not need to be a member of the ALPD to apply for the Production Lumiere Scheme.

Required Skills, Knowledge and Experience

  • Sufficient paid experience EITHER as a freelance production electrician / programmer, OR as a lighting operator / technician / engineer in lighting, OR demonstrable transferrable skills is required from applicants.
  • A solid technical understanding of lighting and the production process including:
    • electrical safety
    • power planning, cabling and mains distribution
    • network and data distribution
    • technical drawing (Vectorworks, CAD etc).
    • EOS programming
  • A strong commitment to developing a career in lighting as demonstrated by work experience, previous production electrics or programming work, training or by other means.
  • Experience of production electrics for at least one show. This can include projects undertaken whilst in training or unpaid work. Candidates should be prepared to give details of any previous prep/programming work in application and if invited to interview.
  • Experience of using CAD software: the minimum level required is to be able to adjust an LX plan and update changes to an existing LX plan.
  • Understanding and commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion.

Desirable Skills, Knowledge and Experience

  • Ability to work quickly and creatively, with an attention to detail.
  • Basic knowledge of the UK theatre sector.
  • A minimum of one year working professionally in the industry.

 

PART 1: Glyndebourne

Job Title: ALPD Production Lumiere

Reports to: Head of Lighting and AV, Lighting Supervisors and visiting Lighting Designers.

Dates: 29th January to 19th April 2024.

The successful applicant’s primary role is to provide production electrics and programming support working within the Glyndebourne Lighting and AV Department.

The Lumiere will be based at Glyndebourne, working within the Lighting & AV Department helping with the preparations for the upcoming Festival. They will work closely with the rest of the department learning to support and collaborate with them in a supportive team environment.

Duties:

  • Assist Lighting Supervisors and Senior Technicians with preparations for the upcoming Festival.
  • Be part of the team responsible for all theatre and stage lighting equipment, and for all aspects of lighting production. 
  • Work with senior members of the team to help specify, design and manufacture inbuilt set electrics.
  • Develop and produce show - ready documentation in the form of lighting, rigging and plugging plans.
  • Ensure all revival documentation is updated accurately and that all operating cue sheets are ready for use.
  • Familiarisation with all show documentation - Lightwright, Vectorworks, MLA.
  • Any other duties commensurate with the role.

PART 2: Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre

Job Title: ALPD Production Lumiere.

Reports to: Head of Lighting.

Dates: 22nd April to 17th May 2024.

Taking the skills from their time at Glyndebourne, the Lumiere will continue to build on their skills and strengthening these on whilst prepping and opening the season.

Duties:

  • Assist the Head of Lighting and Lighting Technicians with preparations for the upcoming summer season.
  • Be part of the team responsible for all theatre and stage lighting equipment, and for all aspects of lighting production. 
  • To prep and provide production support for the start of the summer season alongside the Head of Lighting.
  • Work with members of the team to help specify, design and manufacture inbuilt set electrics.
  • Develop and produce show - ready documentation in the form of lighting, rigging and plugging plans.
  • Familiarisation with all show documentation - Lightwright, Vectorworks, MLA.
  • Any other duties commensurate with the role.

PART 3: Lamp & Pencil

Job Title: ALPD Production Lumiere.

Reports to: Staff members appropriate for each task.

Dates: 20th May to 31st May 2024.

Building on their skills with set electrics from their time at Glyndebourne and Regents Park Open Air Theatre, the Lumiere will learn how large-scale projects are drawn, built, and installed whilst working with the team at Lamp & Pencil, in their workshop and onsite. Lamp & Pencil draws on a range of creative interpretation, technical design, engineering and manufacturing techniques. We sit between departments and must understand not only the technology but also the scenic, prop, costume & other requirements. 

Duties:

  • Assist the team at Lamp & Pencil to assemble practicals, set electrics and other items in accordance with instructions provided. 
  • Assist with the delivery of a project to our clients within the company framework processes and budgets. 
  • Work with the team to specify, source, assemble, install, operate, remove, and return to storage components and elements as required for projects. 
  • Lamp & Pencil work on multiple projects throughout the year, so we will endeavour to have you spend time with each of our departments to see how they work together to build complex and bespoke practicals. This will involve time with our project managers, technicians, warehouse and engineers.
  • Any other duties commensurate with the role.

What can I expect to be paid?

The total fee for the four-month scheme is £13,322.

PART 1: Glyndebourne will pay the living wage based on a 40-50 hour week. Hours are anticipated to even out across the 3 months. The Lumière will be an employee of Glyndebourne for this part of the Scheme.

PART 2: Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre will pay a weekly fee of £677 based on a 46 hour week. The Lumiere will be an employee of RPOAT for this part of the Scheme and paid via payroll.

PART 3: The ALPD will pay a fee of £1334 and travel expenses. There will also be a weekly accommodation contribution for Parts 2 & 3 when working away from home. This will paid upon receipt of invoice.

First Interview: On Zoom with a panel w/c 18th December.
Second Interview: At Glyndebourne w/c 2nd January.

  • PART 1: Glyndebourne – 29th January to 19th April 2024.
  • PART 2: Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre – 22nd April to 17th May 2024.
  • PART 3: Lamp & Pencil – 20th to 31st May 2024.
  • Debrief meeting: Summer 2024 depending on availability.
