Marty Langthorne
Biography
Marty’s work spans Theatre, Live art & Dance. As Lighting Designer he has worked in venues such as Southbank Centre, Saddlers Wells, Barbican Theatre, Soho Theatre, Roundhouse, Old Vic Tunnels and Wilton Music Hall, as well as in site specific and gallery contexts. In recent years he has collaborated with Anoushka Shankar, Dickie Beau, Force Majeure, Penny Arcade, Scottee, Bryony Kimmings, Sheila Ghelani, Chloe Dechery, Curious, Andrew Poppy, Julia Bardsley, Karen Christopher, Natasha Davis, Bob Karper and Marisa Carnesky. As part of the Duckie collective he has designed many of their theatrical club events. His solo fine art practise investigates light, colour and memory within the gallery space.

Terror, in fact, is most poignantly conveyed by Marty Langthorne’s lighting choices, the standout feature of this production. The hanging lamp in the kitchen flickers as voices from the past return once more, reflecting the woman’s shaky grip on reality. A blackout is likewise masterfully employed, plunging the audience into a period of uncomfortable confusion, a mirror to the ways this female migrant’s identity was erased by her husband, leaving her to find her own light once more.

With spotlights against the white curtain from behind to create an animated silhouette of Beau, to the faint amber washes to create an eerie sepia-toned atmosphere on the stage as Beau takes the dismantled limbs of false bodies and slips behind the curtain to “re-member” them again, to the disco inferno that glitters and gleams in a spectrum of proud colours upon the stage as Beau dances to the interviews remixed into a queer party anthem, Marty Langthorne’s expertise at reaching the desired effect without falter goes to prove his dextrous affinity for creating the perfect vessel for Beau and his intentions.

Acknowledgement must also be given to Dickie’s one bit of support from Martin Langthorne’s touching lighting design, a man who knows the true power of a blackout and faded lighting. Langthorne’s lighting design brings warmth to the show whilst encased in darkness: we don’t see Dickie dancing and gliding around a small black-boxed room at Camden People’s Theatre, but dancing on a dark night under lampposts on a suburban street. Watching Dickie dashing and darting in and out of the sheer darkness and carefully placed ambient lighting was in itself a beautiful image to watch. Not only is this piece powerful, but also the beauty and aesthetics of the stage combined with Dickie’s fluid and jarring movements are truly mesmerising and hypnotic
