Chris Barham
Biography
I teach Lighting, Sound and Digital Production on the Bath Spa University - Theatre, Festival and Event Production course.
I graduated with a degree in Technical Theatre from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in 2002, and through my academic career to date, have gained a Masters in Professional Practice in Higher Education, a PGCHE, and Teaching Fellowship (FHEA).
I have worked in the Theatre and Live Events industry for over 20 years, in a variety of areas and roles, at venues such as the Criterion Theatre – West End, the Polka Theatre – Wimbledon and the Theatre Royal – Bath.
I also work as a freelance Lighting Designer, Production Electrician and Lighting Programmer. I can also offer online training on various softwares such as ETC EOS Family, Capture, and QLab 4.7 and 5.
I have taught technical theatre at the University of Kent, Anglia Ruskin University, and the University of the West of England previously.
I enjoy researching digital technologies for online and in person learning through a hybrid approach, with an emphasis on teaching the technical theatre arts.
I work with immersive technologies such as Virtual Worlds, Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality.
Through this research, I completed my Masters dissertation.
"In the Post show chat last night, one audience member wanted to congratulate the lighting design. Well done, another beautiful piece of work" - Rachael Savage, Artistic Director of Vamos Theatre - 'The Best Thing' 2016 Tour
"Excellent use of lighting and shadow in the production, without wanting to give anything away" and "Really enjoyed the background music too - and thought the set and lighting was all excellent". - Audience members - 'The Best Thing' - Vamos Theatre Tour 2016
''Production standards all around were excellent. Lighting especially effective. Special mention should be made of the lighting design, which was highly effective at supporting the set design and transporting us into another world. I also liked the simple use of fairy lights in jars in Skitterbang’s magical cave.'' - 'Skitterbang Island' - Polka Theatre 2010 Arts Council assessor - Sydney Thornbury
''It’s all usually lit in eerie green and purple tones that match Martin Ward’s beautiful, often mournful, score''. - The Stage review - Nuala Calvi - 'Skitterbang Island' 2014.
''Smaller 2D puppets add variation, whilst Chris Barham’s lighting immerses the audience in the tale for brief periods – much to the delight of the many children.'' - A Younger Theatre review - Hannah Tookey - 'Skitterbang Island' 2014.
''Skitterbang Island is atmospheric in the extreme.'' - Children's Theatre reviews.com - Flossie Waite - 'Skitterbang Island' 2014.
