Callum Macdonald
Biography
Callum is a freelance lighting designer, associate designer and touring re-lighter, working across theatre, dance, opera and live events, both around the UK and internationally.
During the early years in his career he started as a lighting technician at The New Wolsey Theatre in Ipswich, spending as much time as possible shadowing incoming designers and touring re-lighters. Throughout the Wolsey years he built on his creative connections and worked his way up the ranks, allowing him to fully invest in a freelance design career in 2012.
More recently, in 2019 Callum was one of 38 emerging designers to be selected for the Association of Lighting Designers’ prestigious ‘Lumiere Scheme’, through which he was paired with the distinguished designer Mark Jonathan for a year of technical and career mentorship.
Over the course of 2021-22, Callum was supported by Arts Council England as part of their ‘Develop Your Creative Practice’ campaign, affording him the opportunity to build on his working practice as an associate to Johanna Town, Mark Jonathan, Matthew Haskins and Lucy Carter on a number of large-scale productions, including drama, musicals, opera and ballet.
Callum is a member of The Association for Lighting Production and Design (ALPD) and of Equity.
